Labiaplasty: Dr Gatri reduces the labia minora by laser or by surgery, in Paris 16th

Labiaplasty — also called labia reduction (labia minora reduction) or nymphoplasty — removes the excess tissue of the labia minora and restores a natural appearance. It is for women bothered day to day by the size or shape of their labia minora: friction, pain during sport or intercourse, discomfort in clothing. Consultations at the practice, 42 avenue Mozart. Depending on your case, Dr Chaima Gatri, OB-GYN and gynecological (gynaecological) surgeon, performs it at the practice, by laser, in a single 45-minute session under local anesthesia (anaesthesia) — or at the Clinique de la Muette, a five-minute walk away, by surgery, under general anesthesia. English-speaking practice.

Recognizing it · Who is it for

Day-to-day discomfort, or a long-held request

The labia minora — the nymphae, which gives nymphoplasty its name — are the two folds of mucosa inside the labia majora; their size and shape vary widely, and that variety is normal. Surgical reduction is classically indicated when there is pain or discomfort linked to their size. Patients' own words come back again and again:

The vulva, front view (diagram). The labia minora, in pink, are the area concerned by the procedure.

A request without physical discomfort is heard and informed in the same way. Labiaplasty is one of the most requested intimate surgery procedures, and one of those growing fastest.

The consultation

An examination, full information, time to decide

Dr Gatri first listens to the request — what bothers you, since when, in what circumstances — then examines the vulva: the examination establishes the length, width and symmetry of the labia minora and the state of the clitoral hood, and points to the appropriate technique.

The information covers what the procedure removes, the anesthesia (anaesthesia), the recovery, the risks and the alternatives; the information sheet of the French National College of Gynecologists and Obstetricians (CNGOF) on nymphoplasty and vulvo-perineoplasty is given to you and talked through. A detailed quotation is then sent by e-mail, to be accepted by electronic signature; for a procedure performed for aesthetic reasons, French law requires this written quotation and a fifteen-day reflection period. Strict smoking cessation before surgery reduces the risk of impaired healing. Appointments are booked on Doctolib with Dr Gatri, under « Consultation pour Nymphoplastie » (labiaplasty consultation), or through the secretariat.

The procedure

By laser at the practice, or by surgery at the clinic

Labiaplasty is performed in one of two ways, and the consultation decides. At the practice, with the Fotona TimeWalker laser, in a single 45-minute session, under local anesthesia: the beam removes the excess tissue and seals as it goes, you go home the same day, and a check-up consultation is set 15 days later. At the Clinique de la Muette, by surgery, under general anesthesia, as day surgery. In both cases the tissue removed is the same: the excess of the labia minora, to restore a natural appearance.

Two resection patterns exist; the choice depends on your anatomy and on your surgeon's practice.

By laser: the two ways of reducing the labia minora (diagram). A: the excess of the free edge is removed along its length. B: a wedge of tissue is removed, then the two edges are brought together. In both cases, a few absorbable stitches are sometimes needed. By surgery, the incision line is closed with stitches.area removedincision line, with a few stitches if needed

With surgery, the stitches are absorbable: they fall away on their own in the weeks that follow. By laser, a few absorbable stitches are sometimes needed. At the practice, anesthesia is local and the check-up takes place 15 days after the session; at the clinic, it is general, with the anesthesiologist (anaesthetist) of the Clinique de la Muette. In both cases you go home the same day, once Dr Gatri agrees.

Recovery

The first days, the first weeks

After the laser session at the practice, you can resume ordinary activity from the next day. Local care lasts fifteen days: a daily shower, then careful drying after the shower and each time you pass urine, to avoid any maceration; you are asked to wear loose clothes and cotton underwear during these fifteen days. The check-up consultation takes place 15 days after the session. Intercourse resumes after 7 days; strenuous sport, tampons, baths and the swimming pool, after one month. Sick leave is generally prescribed; its length depends on the discomfort felt. The guidance below is that of surgery, according to the CNGOF sheet.

You feel a pulling sensation in the treated areas: it is well relieved by simple painkillers during the first week, and ice reduces the edema — the postoperative swelling. Bruises may appear; they then fade markedly.

The result is assessed from two months; the final appearance of the scars is judged at twelve months. The CNGOF sheet details the risks: bleeding or hematoma (haematoma), wound breakdown — the main one, which occurs with a hematoma and calls for local care — and, more rarely, localized necrosis or a transient change in sensation. Heavy continuous bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, unusual pain or fever: call the surgical team.

Alternatives

When the discomfort comes from something else

Intimate discomfort has several causes, and labiaplasty answers one of them; when the examination points to another, the treatment follows.

Risks and complications: what to know before deciding

Every operation carries risks; Dr Gatri goes through them with you at the consultation and gives you the CNGOF information sheet on labiaplasty (nymphoplasty) and vulvo-perineoplasty. The points below use its own words.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, our answers

Will I have surgery on the day of the consultation?

The consultation for surgery is an appointment at the practice. Dr Gatri examines your situation, explains the planned procedure and answers your questions. If the procedure is decided on, you receive a quotation and an informed-consent form; once they are signed, a date is set for the procedure — at the Clinique de la Muette for surgery, at the practice for laser.

What is a labiaplasty?

The surgical reduction of the labia minora: it removes the excess tissue while restoring a natural appearance. It is also called labioplasty or nymphoplasty.

Is it covered by health insurance?

Performed for aesthetic reasons, it is outside the official schedule and is not reimbursed. When Dr Gatri finds, at the consultation, a functional indication, partial coverage by the Assurance maladie is possible: that part is paid directly to Dr Gatri (tiers payant), and the excess fee (dépassement d'honoraires) remains payable by you; it may be reimbursed by your complementary insurer, depending on your policy. Your quotation states it.

What does a labiaplasty cost?

Fees are listed in the fee schedule; the quotation, provided before any decision, gives the exact amount. Clinic charges and the anesthetist's fees are settled with the clinic.

Are there before-and-after photographs?

This site publishes none: the French code of medical ethics forbids them, and a photograph taken of another woman says nothing about your result. At the consultation, Dr Gatri shows you on diagrams what the procedure removes — see Patient information and ethics.

Is it painful?

You feel a pulling sensation in the treated areas; according to the CNGOF sheet, it is well relieved by simple painkillers during the first week, and ice reduces the swelling.

Laser or surgical labiaplasty: what is the difference?

The tissue removed is the same; the instrument, the place and the anesthesia change. By laser (Fotona TimeWalker), the procedure is done at the practice, in a single 45-minute session, under local anesthesia, with a check-up consultation 15 days later; by surgery, it is done at the Clinique de la Muette, under general anesthesia, with the anesthesiologist and the clinic. By laser, a few absorbable stitches are sometimes needed. The examination decides, in consultation with Dr Gatri: the clinical criteria and the extent of the anomaly.

What kind of anesthesia?

Local for laser labiaplasty, at the practice — a single 45-minute session; general for surgical labiaplasty, at the Clinique de la Muette.

When can I go back to sport and intercourse?

With surgery, after the postoperative consultation, generally one month later — the same for tampons and baths. By laser, intercourse resumes after 7 days, and strenuous sport, tampons, baths and the swimming pool after one month; the check-up consultation takes place 15 days after the session. Sick leave is generally prescribed.

Is there a scar?

With surgery, the stitches are absorbable and fall away on their own. By laser, a few absorbable stitches are sometimes needed. The scar lies in the mucosa of the labium, where the excess tissue was removed; its final appearance is judged at twelve months.

Can it be combined with another procedure?

Yes: a clitoral hood reduction can be combined with labiaplasty in the same laser session at the practice, or in the same operation at the clinic; a vulvo-perineoplasty is combined with it at the clinic. The quotation covers all the procedures.

Do I have to stop smoking before surgery?

Yes. The CNGOF sheet is explicit: strict smoking cessation before the operation is essential to reduce the risk of skin necrosis and of impaired healing, both of which are greater in smokers. Tell Dr Gatri at the consultation where you stand, together with your medical history and every treatment you take: the sheet asks for precisely that information.

Can I have children after a labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty concerns the labia minora, outside the vagina: it leaves the uterus, the ovaries and the birth canal untouched, and fertility stays out of the picture. During a later pregnancy, mention this procedure to the doctor or the midwife following you. Dr Gatri is an OB-GYN: she answers these questions at the consultation, at the practice.

Functional version or aesthetic version: Dr Gatri decides. When a procedure exists in a functional (or therapeutic) version and an aesthetic version, Dr Gatri determines, during a prior consultation, after an examination and on a case-by-case basis, which version corresponds to your situation.
